Empower World Wide focuses on improving health and the physical wellbeing for children and women. Our work contributes to reduction of maternal and child mortality.
Our health modal focuses on four outcomes namely,
- Mothers and children know their bodies and surroundings.
- Mothers and children know about poverty related diseases and can prevent them.
- Mothers and children are able to access quality health services.
- Adolescents know their sexual reproductive health and have the right to make their choices
Empower World Wide works with a commitment to sustainable health by involving household, communities, local and national level. Our healthy intervention modal enables us to extend health services to household level but also improve the wellbeing of the community at large.
Empower World Wide is improving the health and well-being of all women, children and families by changing inequitable gender and social norms and empowering women; increasing the coverage, quality, effectiveness, responsiveness and equity of health, maternal and newborn services; and expanding and amplifying women’s voices, participation and influence in society.
We work with all stake holders to ensure sustainable health solutions and a productive healthy community.
OUR APPROACH
Sexual and Reproductive Health
Empower World Wide is committed to gender equality and reducing global poverty by Supporting sexual, reproductive and maternal health and rights is therefore. We introduce targeted programming, increase investment and supporting policies in meeting the reproductive health needs of women, adolescents and men in societies. We believe that access to sexual, reproductive and maternal health services is both a fundamental human right and a critical development issue.
Our programming support girls’ and women’s right to safe childbirth, reproductive self-determination and bodily integrity. We work to reduce maternal mortality, increase healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies, and the elimination of related discrimination and violence. To achieve this, Empower World Wide is improving the health and well-being of women, children and families by changing inequitable gender and social norms and empowering women; increasing the coverage, quality, effectiveness, responsiveness and equity of health services; and expanding and amplifying women’s voices, participation and influence in society. Our programming focus ante-natal care, family child spacing and planning, access to quality services, and prevention, menstrual hygiene, reduction of sexually transmitted infections and awareness.
In Uganda we work with local authorities to identify local healthy challenges and establish relevant programming to address them. We work with community leaders, women and health workers to understand and address the reasons for the high maternal death rate. We challenge social and gender norms so women can make decisions for their own health and well-being. We also create safe time for girls in communities and help them to learn about their healthy, bodies and sexuality.
Child Health (Maternal and new born survival health)
Most of the child deaths occur in poor countries and are almost preventable. At Empower World Wide we help children in the poorest communities through providing parenting education, nutritional support, vaccinations for children affected by conflict and disasters and treatment for diseases such as malaria, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases and others.
Empower World Wide puts much emphasis on pregnant mothers and husbands by educating them on child care and parenting, monitoring pregnant mothers and investing in community facilities to improve delivery facilities. We also invest in much needed basics such as adequate nutrition, bed nets, medical treatment, annual health screening and skilled health workers to keep children alive.
HIV/AIDS
More than 90% of people living with HIV/AIDS leave in developing countries. People in poor communities are at increased risk because of the effects of poverty – lack of; knowledge and awareness, prevention services, counselling and testing, lack of access to treatment and ARVs (anti-retroviral drugs), high levels of stigma and discrimination. Women are also at a higher risk of infection than men because of gender inequality – meaning they have less choice over their sexual and reproductive health. Infected children are less likely to have their basic needs met and are more likely to be sick or malnourished, suffer psychological trauma, lag behind in a series of developmental outcomes, endure abuse and become HIV positive. Empower World Wide works in the District where the first incidence of HIV /AIDS was discovered-Rakai District. Since 1980s, the numbers of child headed families have increased and the level of vulnerability at household level is extreme when compared with other areas. HIV/AIDS prevalence has not gone down and adolescents and women are the ones at high risk.
Empower World Wide works to prevent infections by educating girls and boys on sexual and reproductive health. We ensure people have enough to eat and help people living with HIV to earn an income through livelihoods training and support. we support people living with HIV to start self-help groups aimed at empowering them economically, socially, physically and spiritually. These groups create a social network through which they can share information, issues and resources. And this reduces stigma, increases their self-worth and e ignites hope for life.
We provide condoms, voluntary counselling and testing and prevention, treatment of sexually transmitted infections and opportunistic infections, transport to access ARVS, HIV/AIDS education and Nutrition supplement. We also advocate for policy changes to reduce discrimination and improve health support. And we help sex workers protect themselves from HIV infection and from violent discrimination by clients, police and others. Empower World Wide programs on child health support children at risk of HIV to live healthier lives and aim to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the virus.
In our modal we employ a Community-based healthcare to enable successful implementation of the health system. Our success depends on community participation and their cooperation with our health staff. We work at the community and facility level to strengthen the capacity of female community health volunteers, health workers, and doctors so that they can provide educational, preventive, and curative health services. Other services are delivered through trainings on basic literacy skills, making oral rehydration solutions, and raising awareness on good hygiene practices through WASH activities. We ensure full immunization coverage in target areas, track pregnant women for their antenatal and postnatal checkups, and promote facility delivery. Our health promoters refer critical patients to the facilities, distribute insecticide-treated bed nets for new mothers and newborn children and ensure tuberculosis treatment. Our interventions focus on playing a pivotal role in both primary and secondary level healthcare.
